FRANKIE VELEZ PRESENTS "SALVAGED PERSPECTIVES" BY J CARLOS PINTO
Thursday, April 28 · 7:00pm - 10:00pm
PHANTOM AUDIO
48 WEST 25TH ST. 10TH FL
New York, NY
J Carlos Pinto is a self represented artist from Guatemala who has been working for the past 10 years in New York, and his art is as expressive as his native and lush, colorful Central American nation. Pinto’s artwork is also poignantly aggressive and projects a revolutionary declaration. The scope of his art covers abstract painting, tile work, wood work, stencil spray, and use of non-biodegradable plastic and glass. Most of Pi...nto’s media comes from salvaged material and found objects
Pinto’s use of plastic is unique and pulsates with hidden significance. He uses discarded plastic Metro Cards, which he dices and cuts into different shapes and pastes together to form pictures and messages. The idea of using these non-biodegradable cards is to reinforce recycling and prolonging its use indefinitely while providing the artist with a source free material. It is also a way of reminding us about the danger this material can cause if left to seep into the earth.
Pinto uses broken tile and glass to create mosaics, using the spectrum of colors to impart rich visualizations of his subjects. His weaving of color is also prominent in his folk oriented handicrafts, such as Mayan inspired masks, painted gourds, as well as abstract paintings that, like a mirage, play with the imagination.
Issues such as and animal rights, environmental preservation, and empowerment of minorities are frequently incorporated into Pinto’s work. He is also planning a series of murals and public art in Brooklyn, New York.
Pinto’s art exudes confidence, energy and challenge. It draws one into a dual world of playfulness and social responsibility. His legacy, as he sees it, is to be known as an artist who demands change from the Green Revolution.

Martina Secondo Russo (Italy/U.S.A.) was born in Genoa, Italy but has lived in New York City for most of her life. She paints both on canvas, and on plywood cut into the shapes of limbs and full human bodies. Her work is inspired by: horror, tattoos, toys, renaissance art, pin-up art, and the juxtaposition of beauty with the grotesque.
For this show, she will be presenting two life sized “pin-ups”, covered in tattoos depicting everything from Halloween decorations, classic Tattoo Flash, Skulls and many other images. Alongside the full figures, she will be showing a dozen or so “Tattooed Limbs”… Hands, feet and arms with bloody stumps, which appear to have been freshly ripped off a tattooed victim.
Frank Russo (U.S.A.) is a Brooklyn Artist who has been drawing comic books since the age of nine. His art fuses a life-long love for trash culture and fast music with a wide variety of styles and media such as comics, paintings, toys, props and costumes.
His infamous “Monsterfaces” were featured on a series of Collectable Art Trading Cards (of the same name) released in 2007 by Monsterwax Inc. Aliens, Monsters, Robots, Skeletons, Hideous Beasts, Witches and Grizzly Ghouls are all part of this collection of monster head wooden cutouts, painted with acrylic in bright psychedelic colors.
In addition to his “Monsterfaces”, Frank will also be showing an assortment of other paintings, drawings and comic strips will be sure to inspire many a tattoo design.
Since 2003, these two artists have been showing the best in Horror Pop Underground Art at their NYC art space, MF Gallery. In 2009, they opened a second gallery in Genoa, Italy where they continue to show artists from around the world.
Now, Martina and Frank are bringing a selection of their best “Heads & Limbs” to 516 Gallery at Art N Souls Studios. The Gallery, located at 516 W.
