"FUMEROISM" BY FUMERO

FUMERO's NYC SOLO DEBUT EXHIBITION

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011 · 7:00pm - 10:00pm

PHANTOM AUDIO
48 WEST 25TH ST. 10TH FL
New York, NY

Fumero combines the American pop culture of urban art with his caricature-like, figurative paintings. The “wildstyle” letter design, with its highly stylized alphabetical abstractions and decorative embellishments transformes into the dynamic energy of his abstracted human figure. The visually psychological power derives from a technique illustrating a harmonious interaction among bold contour lines, and shapes filled with vivid colors. Within the contours of the hard edged shapes are intense contrasting colors that interact with each other, creating a moving energy that powerfully projects outward to the viewer.

As a little boy at the age of four, Fumero discovered that he liked to draw. Beginning with stick figures to oval shapes, by age five he began to copy newspaper comics such as, Ziggy and Snoopy. At the same time, family visits from New Jersey to the Bronx exposed him to the graffiti painted New York City subway trains. Looking out of the car window and starring at the trains’ vibrantly painted cartoons and colorfully animated 3-D lettering fascinated him as a child and left an impression that would resurface later on.

At the age of thirteen, Fumero began to create graffiti-style lettering starting with colored markers on paper and ventured onto walls with simple tags and bubble letter throw-ups. By fourteen, Fumero completed his first 4 colored piece and graffitti became Fumero’s primary artistic focus. To Fumero, graffiti was simply an added extension of cartooning and provided a means to explore lines, shapes, colors and letter design in a new and exciting way. The remaining teenage years focused on graffiti art and the development of his cartoon characters, letter styles and color schemes which filled his sketchbook. After high school Fumero attended county college in New Jersey as a graphic design major and then went to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, as a cartooning/illustration major. At SVA, Fumero developed a personal style and the infancy of Fumeroism was born.

FRANKIE VELEZ PRESENTS "SALVAGED PERSPECTIVES" BY J CARLOS PINTO

Thursday, April 28 · 7:00pm - 10:00pm

PHANTOM AUDIO
48 WEST 25TH ST. 10TH FL
New York, NY

J Carlos Pinto is a self represented artist from Guatemala who has been working for the past 10 years in New York, and his art is as expressive as his native and lush, colorful Central American nation. Pinto’s artwork is also poignantly aggressive and projects a revolutionary declaration. The scope of his art covers abstract painting, tile work, wood work, stencil spray, and use of non-biodegradable plastic and glass. Most of Pi...nto’s media comes from salvaged material and found objects

Pinto’s use of plastic is unique and pulsates with hidden significance. He uses discarded plastic Metro Cards, which he dices and cuts into different shapes and pastes together to form pictures and messages. The idea of using these non-biodegradable cards is to reinforce recycling and prolonging its use indefinitely while providing the artist with a source free material. It is also a way of reminding us about the danger this material can cause if left to seep into the earth.

Pinto uses broken tile and glass to create mosaics, using the spectrum of colors to impart rich visualizations of his subjects. His weaving of color is also prominent in his folk oriented handicrafts, such as Mayan inspired masks, painted gourds, as well as abstract paintings that, like a mirage, play with the imagination.

Issues such as and animal rights, environmental preservation, and empowerment of minorities are frequently incorporated into Pinto’s work. He is also planning a series of murals and public art in Brooklyn, New York.

Pinto’s art exudes confidence, energy and challenge. It draws one into a dual world of playfulness and social responsibility. His legacy, as he sees it, is to be known as an artist who demands change from the Green Revolution.

GRAFFITI LEGENDS ON A COLD DAY

When I called Sienide(Artist/Graffiti Artist)to speak about an upcoming show,he tells me to come uptown to Tuff City Tattoos in the Bronx. The first thing I thought about was my mission from Brooklyn to Bronx on the D train. He tells me he'll be spraying with graffiti legends. I did not think twice. I jumped in the shower got dressed and hopped on the train. When I arrived I was introduced to Kit,Boots119,Peso131 who is also a member of the oldschool Fearless 4 rap crew, and Slave who I had the honor to show in my GRAFFOLUTION group show last summer. It was awesome listening to their stories of the early days of graffiti. Did I tell you my feet froze? At the end it was all worth it. Here are some pics of what took place. The rest of the pics will be on an album on my Facebook page. Thanks Sienide!
